Vacation in Shanghai

 Shanghai trip Feb 6-11 2008 065

You probably didn't realize it, but I took a vacation! My lack of updates recently has not been for lack of interest, but time. Work was very busy through the month of January, with no spare minutes in a day. No kidding. So the Lord rewarded me by opening up a chance to travel to Shanghai for a few days! My friend Joe has lived there for the past several years, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to drop in for a visit while I was "in the neighborhood."

I thought I could get some work done while I was there...but not a chance. This is about the extent of the work I got done! It was a wonderful break!

Shanghai trip Feb 6-11 2008 001

I flew in on the eve of Chinese New Year...the best time to go! Joe treated me to my first real Chinese dinner...burgers, fries, and chocolate chip pancakes--with a fork. I love China!!!

Anyone who knows me knows how much I loooove fireworks and how disappointed I am when the display is over. I think Shanghai has cured me of that. It's hysterical! There are fireworks going off EVERYwhere in the city! Literally every street you go down random people are blowing these things up. We had quite the time dodging sparks and expolsives...darting through allyways and laughing at stupid people lighting these things on fire. It lasted all night long, and was still going on at 9 AM when I woke up! Every night there were more displays...it got to the point (on Monday night when I was trying to sleep as they were blowing things up right by my window!) that I just had to laugh. It was so funny. I would totaly do it again next Chinese New Year! A people group who know how to party. ha.

The crowds were incredible, too. With everyone being on vacation, people from all over China came to visit. You also know how I love crowds. So this was the best time for a visit! However, even some of the crowds were too great for Joe and I to tackle. We would find cool restaurants instead. And Starbucks. We laughed at the end of my trip that we basically had coffee at a lot of cool places.

Joe was a great tour-guide! It was probably the most laid-back vacation I've ever had. Normally my vacations involve catching planes, renting a car, figuring out my way around a city, arranging places and times to meet up with friends etc etc. This time, though, the only person I knew in the city was my friend Joe and he would ask me what time I wanted him to stop by in the morning, which allowed me to sleep in as late or early as I wanted...and then he would show up at my door with Starbucks and say, hey...what about doing this today...or...I got tickets to go to...   That is what vacations are made for. :)

We also had fun hanging with some of his friends! Everyone was on vacation, so it was fun to meet so many new people! Wishing they all lived a little closer!

Sadly, as all good things do, my vacation came to an end. We were late for the airport because of a manicure I  was trying to get...so we took the Maglev (magnetic levitation) train and made it to the airport in about 10 minutes flat! Pretty incredible to see the world swoosh by you at 450 km/hr.

So, now I'm back in Korea and Shanghai is just a fun memory. Such a great experience! Thanks, Joe!

The true test of skating skills is not if you can jump and twirl, but if you can stay standing up with kids all around you who are grabbing on, trying to stay up, too. Their feet are way out front, or way out back, or going in opposite directions, while you are hanging on to them, trying to keep them up without falling down yourself!

Yep, it was fun. :)

Chris and Megan's WEDDING!!!

While I am on the topic of weddings...I am agonzing over the fact that I'm missing one!

Chris and Megan...I will be thinking of you guys all day tomorrow...and wish you ALL the BEST! Chris, you've been like a brother to me! And Meg...we've got some fun memories, too! Can't wait to see you again as a Mr. and Mrs. >grin<  I'll swing through Chicago sometime this spring to get the play-by-play from you on how your day was...can't wait to see you again!

Congratulations!

Chris & Megan

A Korean Wedding!

I was thrilled to be invited to a co-worker's wedding! Sang Su and his beautiful bride enjoyed a perfect day as they celebrated their love and commitment. Such a neat experience!

It was amazing...I was literally instantly surrounded by a group of girls when I arrived to the wedding. I feel like such a celebrity over here...haha. They love a chance to practice their English and must think foreigners like me are such a novelty. You know me...I'll eat that up. ;)

I was in awe at the mix of tradition and modern ideas at this beautiful wedding.

Christmas Celebrations

I feel like I've been stock-piling pictures for soo long! Work has been so full bringing in this new year...but I'm loving it. Hopefully by you seeing these Christmas pics it will make you feel like you were there with me...becuase you know I wish you were!

I have been attending Life Church and enjoying the people there so much. We had a Christmas dinner, and it really felt like a family dinner with all the trimmings! Here is our dreadful little Christmas goose getting ready for our plates...luckily there was a LOT more food than this little thing. lol It was a great time of visiting and eating...I'm so grateful to have such a welcoming and supportive church family here!

...and an instant and dear friend Naomi. We have had some FUN times together here! I'm already missing her!

We found this beautiful church while we were driving and had to stop and explore it. was the Sunday before Christmas, so we even peeked in on the Korean Catholic service.

On Christmas Eve my Korea family and I were so excited! We went to a Christmas Eve service...all the kids had a part in the performances!

And then we headed home for our time of family worship, food, Christmas movies, and everyone camping out in the livingroom to sleep under the Christmas tree! (a family tradition of ours that I introduced to my family here...it was almost like I was really home for Christmas!) >grin<

218 Christmas Eve Party!

John loooved Jesus' birthday cake! >grin<

219 John LOVED Jesus' birthday cake!!!

We enjoyed a great gift exchange...then posed for the camera. :)

220 The Christmas pose with our gifts

After our gift exchange and half way through our first movie (Home Alone2!) there was a knock at the door! It was midnight...and the midnight carolers had arrived! We invited them in to join our party and wished we had saved some extra food for them! It was so much fun, though!

222 Midnight Carolers showed up at our door! So we invited them in for the party! 223 Midnight Carolers showed up at our door! 224 Midnight Carolers showed up at our door! So we invited them in for a party!

And that was my Christmas Eve! Spent with some amazing people, and making some wonderful memories.

Christmas Day, for me, was relaxing...but then of course I had my first real "getting lost" experience on my way to a Christmas party...I got on the wrong bus, and have no idea where I ended up! Let's just say I was glad I wasn't in a hurry while I tried to figure out where I was while Brad came to rescue me. haha. Didn't quite make it to the party in time...but had a wonderful day!!! Sure missed you all at home...it was so nice to talk, though! So glad for our easy communication! Makes Korea seem not as far away...especially on Christmas.
